Brazil’s international quit the Camp Nou in 2017 for PSG to pay a record transfer fee.

Since then, Neymar has been frequently linked to a return to Barcelona. He had so far failed in the Champions League with France.

In May, the forward made a commitment to PSG, and signed a new four year deal that will tie him to the club through 2025.

Laporta claims that Neymar, despite appearing to be settled in Paris is still keen to return to Barcelona.

Laporta said that he had discussed the possibility of a transfer with the Brazilian after he was elected club president in March.

Laporta said that they tried to sign Neymar in a live interview with TV3.

It seemed like an interesting sign at that moment after his election victory. He made contact. He was eager to come.

“We misunderstood [La Liga’s] fair-play [rules] at the time. We wouldn’t have accepted that offer if we knew all the rules.”

Barcelona had to allow Lionel Messi to join PSG because of La Liga’s restrictions on wage spending.

Their wages bill was 110 percent of the club’s revenues before Messi’s departure. This meant that a Neymar move would have been impossible.

Laporta stated in an interview that the figure remains at 80 percent despite Messi’s departure and Antoine Griezmann’s return to Atletico Madrid.

Laporta stated that the France international was “a great player”

“I believe he doesn’t fit in our system, but his attitude was always very positive.” He was, however, not the player that we needed.

Barcelona’s La Liga match against Sevilla was originally scheduled for this weekend but has been delayed due to clashes with World Cup qualifiers from South America.
